Now, with the right starting image, creative prompts, and cinematic camera moves, you can build your story scene by scene, with no costly equipment required.

Runway ML is like having a mini film studio at your fingertips.

You’re not just editing... you’re directing, storytelling, bringing ideas to life that might have otherwise stayed trapped in your imagination.

Feed it an image, guide it with prompts, and watch it generate cinematic 5- or 10-second scenes that feel like a pro-level production.

Let’s walk through everything you need: pricing, project setup, prompt crafting, and camera moves that'll make your scenes pop.

Finding the Right Plan

Before we dive into the action, let’s look at the plans to find one that fits your creative needs. Below are the plans based on an annual payment:

• Basic (Free): Great for testing the waters, with limited features and 720p exports with watermarks.

• Standard ($12/month): Adds watermark-free, high-res exports and gives you 625 credits per month* for a solid start.

• Pro ($28/month): Custom voices, premium export quality, and 2,250 monthly credits—perfect if you’re creating regularly.

• Unlimited ($76/month): All-access, unlimited video creation, and the top-tier features for heavy users and teams.

Project Setup

Now, let’s set up your first project and get things moving.

Step 1: Sign Up and Explore the Dashboard

Go to: https://app.runwayml.com/login

Sign up for a new account and enter the dashboard—a creative playground waiting for you to explore.

You’ll find options for text-to-video, image transformations, and, of course, video generation.

Click around and get comfortable with the layout.

Step 2: Start a New Project with Gen-3 Alpha Turbo

For this tutorial, we will focus on Generative video.

Head to Generative Video.

You should be using Gen-3 Alpha Turbo by default. Otherwise select that from the dropdown on the top left of your screen.

This is the free model that is optimized for speed and cost-effectiveness.

You may also name the project to keep your assets organised.

Prompt Structure

When creating videos with Runway ML, we have two main approaches for our prompts:

Text-only Base Prompt (Only available with paid version):

Use descriptive text to generate a video from scratch.

This method works best when you follow a clear structure:

[camera movement]: [establishing scene]. [additional details].

Example:
"Overhead shot: A dense forest canopy sways gently in the wind. Sunlight filters through the leaves, creating dynamic patterns of light and shadow on the forest floor."

This divides your prompt into:

• Camera Movement: "Overhead shot" tells the AI how to frame and move the camera.

• Scene Details: Describes the forest and the swaying motion of the canopy.

• Atmosphere: Adds depth with "sunlight filtering" and "dynamic patterns."

Image + Text Base Prompt:

Combine an input image with a text prompt to enhance and direct the video output.

Instead of describing the image’s content, focus on the desired movement or dynamic elements you want in the video.

Example:

Image: A photo of a hot air balloon floating over a desert at sunset.

Prompt:
"The camera slowly tilts down to reveal the vast desert below, bathed in golden hour light, while the balloon drifts gently toward the horizon."

This prompt works by:

• Focusing on Motion: "Slowly tilts down" and "drifts gently" add natural movement.

• Enhancing Atmosphere: "Golden hour light" sets the mood, while the prompt avoids rehashing what’s already visible in the image.

This approach combines the visual context provided by the image with the prompt's instructions for motion and style, creating a cohesive, cinematic result.

Step 3: Craft the Prompt

For this tutorial, I’ll use the Image + Text Base Prompt.

I’ve uploaded an image of a Samoyed running through a lavender field as my starting point.

My prompt will focus on adding smooth tracking camera movement and enhancing the natural beauty of the scene without repeating what the image already shows.

Here’s the full prompt for our example:

"Smooth tracking shot: A fluffy Samoyed runs joyfully through a vibrant lavender field. The camera follows closely, capturing the swaying flowers and tilting up to reveal the expansive blue sky."

Each part of the prompt works hand-in-hand with the image to create a dynamic, cinematic scene:

1. Movement and Camera Action:

   • “Smooth tracking shot” specifies how the camera should move, following the Samoyed as it runs.

2. Subject’s Action:

   • “A fluffy Samoyed runs joyfully” focuses on the dog’s movement, adding energy and emotion.

3. Environmental Dynamics:

   • “Through a vibrant lavender field” highlights the setting, while “capturing the swaying flowers” introduces motion in the environment, making the scene feel alive.

4. Cinematic Depth:

   • “Tilting up to reveal the expansive blue sky” describes a gradual camera transition, adding depth and creating a visually satisfying ending.

Camera Control

Now that we’ve crafted the prompt, let’s use Runway ML’s Camera Controls to add motion and cinematic flair.

For our Samoyed running through a lavender field, we’ll apply Horizontal Tracking, Zoom Out, and Vertical Tilt to create a dynamic, engaging video.

Step 4: Access Camera Controls

Click on Camera from the toolbar to open the control settings.

Step 5: Configure Camera Movements

Adjust the camera settings (Horizontal = 5, Zoom = -3, Tilt = 2).

Horizontal Tracking

• What it does: Follows the Samoyed as it runs.

• How to set it:

  • Set Horizontal = -5 for smooth movement.

Zoom Out

• What it does: Reveals more of the lavender field.

• How to set it:

  • Set Zoom = -3 for a subtle pull-back.

Vertical Tilt

• What it does: Transitions upward to capture the sky.

• How to set it:

  • Set Tilt = 2 for a smooth upward motion.

Step 6: Execute and Refine

Click Generate, take a sip of your drink and we got ourselves a happy samoyed running through a lavender field!

Now for those with a keen eye, you will notice our dog doesn’t interact with the environment naturally.

We may continue to refine the video to fix that, but do note that each generation takes up credits depending on how long the video is.
